Red Dot Pistol Fundamentals

The Red Dot Pistol Fundamentals course is designed for new and experienced shooters who want to improve their handgun skills using a pistol-mounted red dot optic. This hands-on class teaches students how to properly set up, present, acquire, and track the dot for faster target acquisition, improved accuracy, and greater shooting confidence.

Students will learn the fundamentals of red dot shooting, including optic selection and setup, zeroing procedures, grip, stance, presentation from the holster, target transitions, recoil management, and efficient dot tracking techniques. The course also addresses common challenges shooters experience when transitioning from traditional iron sights to a red dot-equipped pistol.

Through guided instruction and practical live-fire drills, students will develop the skills needed to use their optic-equipped handgun safely and effectively for personal defense, competition, or recreational shooting.

This comprehensive course is designed to teach you everything you need to know about firearm safety, responsibility, and accountability. Whether you’re considering owning or carrying a firearm for self-defense, our course is for you, and you will discover the fundamentals of pistol handling and marksmanship with NAAGA’s Basic Pistol Course.

NAAGA BASIC PISTOL INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATIONS & PRE-CHECKLIST

  1. You must be at least 21 years of age to be eligible to attend an Instructor’s course.

  2. You must be a current NAAGA member, and you must remain current during your tenure as a NAAGA Instructor.

  3. You must fill out the NAAGA Firearms Instructor application in its entirety and submit to the Training Counselor who will oversee your certification process.

  4. You must have taken the NAAGA Basic Pistol Course. If not, you will be required to schedule, take, and pass the Basic Pistol Course at level 4 at minimum before taking the NAAGA Instructor Course. The Basic Pistol Course may only be taken with an active NAAGA Instructor. [NOTE: The purpose of the Instructor course is to “Train the Trainer”. Our primary goal is to educate you on the curriculum and how to communicate the information to your potential students.  You must already have proficiency with firearms and have a solid foundation of the fundamentals.]

To maintain your NAAGA Certified Basic Pistol or Concealed Carry Instructor active you must obtain a “Firearm’s Instructor Policy”.

 

  1. You must obtain Firearms Instructor Insurance (at least a $1,000,000 policy of liability) during your tenure as a NAAGA Firearms Instructor.

  2. We expect you to obtain certifications in CPR, Stop the Bleed, AED, and become an RSO. Though it is not required, it is ideal to be a quality Instructor for your potential students.

To maintain your NAAGA Certified Basic Pistol or Concealed Carry Instructor active status,
the requirement below must be met within two years from the date of your NAAGA Firearms Instructor certification:

 

  1. You must teach at least 20 students the (NAAGA Basic Pistol Course or NAAGA Concealed Carry Course) every two years during your tenure as a NAAGA Firearms Instructor. Your class rosters must be submitted upon completion and will be verified.

Under the guidance of a NAAGA Certified Instructor, you’ll explore pistol types, learn how to select and operate them effectively, and develop essential marksmanship skills. This course teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.

Prerequisite: This course is for adult individuals who are not disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state or local law and are of good repute and possess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics Of Personal Protection In The Home Course. Participants must also understand the basic legal concepts relating to the use of firearms in self-defense, and must know and observe not only general gun safety rules but also those safety principles that are specific to defensive situations. Description: This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family and provides information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.

Prerequisite: This course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm). Prospective participants can demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producing an NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.
